If you haven’t climbed before, you can come along to one of our quarterly beginners’ nights at the Castle.  A beginners’ night is just like a standard Thursday night meet, except that beginners are welcome and supervised by regular members.  It’s a great way to try out climbing in a friendly and supportive environment.

How it works

To sign up to one of our beginners’ nights, contact us.  Seb or Lynn (our membership officers) will get in touch with details.  On the day, we’ll meet you at the Castle reception at 7:30 and sign you in as a novice.  Note that you’re responsible for your own entrance fee at the Castle.  You’ll be supervised by a pair of NST members for the evening.  We’ll show you how to tie in to climb, and also supervise you in belaying another climber.  After climbing, we all head to the Brownswood pub round the corner at 10 for a pint and some food.

Note that Not So Trad are not qualified to teach you how to climb.  If you get the bug and want to fast-track your progress, taking a course is a great idea.  The Castle run courses at all levels.

What to bring

All you’ll need is comfortable clothes that allow your body to move – climbing is a pretty gymnastic activity. Think yoga or workout clothes.  A T-shirt and track pants, shorts, leggings or jeans is a common combination.

You’ll also need a harness, rock shoes, a belay plate and optionally some chalk.  All of these can be hired at the Castle – more details here.

If you’d like to come along, please get in touch.
